Materials & Texture

The SeatTable is made from double wall cardboard (see below). This is a fairly sturdy material. Clearly it is not as strong or rigid as say wood or plastic or metal which are commonly used in furniture. However the slight ‘softness’ makes for a more comfortable seat than plastic would for instance. And temperatures do not affect it as they would, say, a metal chair.  Providing that the flutes of the cardboard are running vertically up the sides of the stools, the H-Shape section and the table top the SeatTable will comfortably support the weight of the user.

There are two layers of flutes that give the cardboard its strength.

Cardboard can, however, absorb water which will weaken its structure. To ensure that the cardboard is protected against liquids both sides are laminated with a pattern. Laminating materials such as cardboard does improve the water resistance greatly and toughen the material so that the SeatTable will not be damaged by accidental spills or scratches. Laminating will give a smooth texture to the cardboard. By careful choice of the design to be laminated onto the cardboard it is possible to give the impression of a particular texture. Because of the shape of the SeatTable I wanted to emphasise the blockiness of the structure and opted to create a design that would make the SeatTable look as if it had been carved from rock. This design (seen below), with its fossils dancing across the surface has a weathered look which means that any wear and tear such as dents or scapes will blend in better than they would on say a plain glossy uniformly coloured surface.
